EL DESAFÍO DE SER VIUDA
El desafío de ser viuda es un proyecto fotográfico documental realizado junto a Eric Borremans, en las áreas de Kisumu y Masái Mara de Kenia, que aborda la dura realidad de las viudas luo y masái, marcada por la injusticia, el estigma, el abandono y la pobreza.
El trabajo pretende poner en valor a este colectivo vulnerable en su proceso de superación, aprendizaje y lucha para afrontar su día a día y visibilizar a organizaciones que promueven proyectos para ayudarlas en la supervivencia, dignidad y lucha por sus derechos.
Durante los meses de septiembre y octubre convivimos con viudas de las etnias luo y masái, gracias a la colaboración de tres organizaciones que las ayudan: Nyanam, Maji Moto Cultural Camp y Maasai Child Fund Organization, y al patrocinio de la empresa keniana Securex. A lo largo de las conversaciones que mantuvimos con ellas, la palabra desafío fue el hilo conductor.
Conocer las historias de vida de estas viudas de primera mano, sus miedos, preocupaciones, deseos e ilusiones, y convivir con su pobreza, fortaleza y generosidad, nos conmovieron y admiraron, motivándonos para convertir los testimonios y fotografías obtenidos en un libro solidario, destinado a amplificar sus voces y obtener fondos para apoyarlas en su desafío por una vida digna.

THE CHALLENGE OF BEING A WIDOW
The Challenge of Being a Widow is a documentary photographic project carried out with Eric Borremans in the Kisumu and Maasai Mara areas of Kenya, which addresses the harsh reality of Luo and Maasai widows, marked by injustice, stigma, abandonment, and poverty.
The work aims to highlight this vulnerable group in their process of overcoming adversity, learning, and fighting to face their daily lives and to make visible the organizations that promote projects to help them in their survival, dignity, and fight for their rights.
During the months of September and October of 2023, we lived with widows from the Luo and Maasai ethnic groups, thanks to the collaboration of three organizations that help them: Nyanam, Maji Moto Cultural Camp, and Maasai Child Fund Organization, and the sponsorship of the Kenyan company Securex. Throughout the conversations we had with them, the word "challenge" was the common thread.
Knowing the life stories of these widows firsthand, their fears, concerns, desires, and dreams, and living with their poverty, strength, and generosity, moved and admired us, motivating us to turn the testimonies and photographs obtained into a solidarity book, destined to amplify their voices and obtain funds to support them in their challenge for a dignified life.
